The D40 is a great camera. It's my recommendation to everyone who wants a digital SLR camera for general use. The D40 has replaced the D80. If price matters for you, don't bother looking at the D80. The D40 is much more pleasant to use because it has a bigger, better, snappy five-way nav switch on the back, while the D80 only has four-way. However the D40 doesn't autofocus with non-AF-S lenses. This means if you have any lenses like a 50mm AF you'll have to focus manually.
